Legacy: Building What Lasts Beyond a Lifetime

Day 1: The Foundation of Wisdom

But you are such a heavy load to carry! How can I deal with all your problems and bickering? Choose some well-respected men from each tribe who are known for their wisdom and understanding, and I will appoint them as your leaders.’

-  Deuteronomy 1:12-13 NLT
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.
Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.
-  Proverbs 9:10 NLT
Every lasting legacy begins not with strategy or resources, but with wisdom rooted in the fear of the Lord. Moses reminded the Israelites that leadership, decision-making, and community life must be anchored in godly wisdom rather than appearances or empty promises. The same is true for the legacies we build in our homes, workplaces, and communities. When we prioritize God's wisdom above our own understanding, we lay a foundation that cannot be shaken by shifting circumstances. Ask yourself today: Are the decisions I am making guided by the fear of the Lord, or by the pressures of the world around me?
In what area of your life do you most need to replace human reasoning with God-given wisdom?

Day 2: Planting Trees You Will Never Sit Under

Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the Lord, the Eternal God.
- Genesis 21:33 NLT
Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
- Genesis 12:7 NLT
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba on land that did not yet belong to him. It was an act of radical, intergenerational faith. Tamarisk trees grow slowly and require deep roots to survive inhospitable soil. Abraham was not planting for himself. He was planting for the generations that would come after him. This is the heart of a legacy builder. God calls us to invest in things we may never fully see completed, trusting that our faithfulness today is someone else's breakthrough tomorrow. What trees are you planting for the generation that follows you?
What long-term investment, whether spiritual, relational, or practical, is God calling you to begin today even if you will not see its full fruit?

Day 3: Long Obedience in the Same Direction

It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.
- Hebrews 11:8 NLT
One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram’s wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran’s child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there.
- Genesis 11:31 NLT
Abraham obeyed God and went, even though he did not know where he was going. That kind of obedience is not reckless. It is rooted in deep trust. Terah, Abraham's father, began the journey toward Canaan but stopped short in Haran. He never arrived at the destination, yet his partial obedience still positioned his son to complete what he started. God works across generations. Your faithfulness, even when incomplete or imperfect, still moves the story forward. Do not despise the miles you have already traveled. Long obedience in the same direction is how God builds something that truly lasts.
Where in your life have you stopped short of what God originally called you to pursue? What would it look like to take the next step?

Day 4: Little by Little, Then Suddenly

But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals would multiply and threaten you. I will drive them out a little at a time until your population has increased enough to take possession of the land.
- Exodus 23:29-30 NLT
Share your food with the hungry,
and give shelter to the homeless.
Give clothes to those who need them,
and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
“Then your salvation will come like the dawn,
and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward,
and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
- Isaiah 58:7-8 NLT
God told the Israelites He would not drive out their enemies in a single year. Little by little, He would clear the way as they grew strong enough to possess the land. This is not a picture of a distant or slow God. It is a picture of a wise and intentional Father who prepares His people for what is next. The same principle applies to the legacies we build. Feeding the hungry, helping those in trouble, serving our communities faithfully month after month, these are not small things. They are the steady, faithful acts that God uses to let our light shine in the darkness.
Are you frustrated by the pace of growth in an area of your life or ministry? How does God's "little by little" principle reframe your perspective?

Day 5: The Dream Is Not Dead, It Is Planted

I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.

- 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 NLT
You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.

- Psalm 16:11 NLT
Some of you received a dream from God years ago that appears to have gone silent. The soil looks bare. Nothing seems to be growing. But a seed buried in the ground does not look like a harvest. It looks like nothing at all. God is the one who makes things grow, and His timing is never wasted. The joy and peace He provides are not dependent on visible results or favorable circumstances. They are found in His presence alone. Return to His presence today. Let Him breathe fresh life into the vision He placed in you. The dream is not dead. It is planted.
What dream or calling has God placed in your life that you have quietly set aside? What would it look like to surrender it back to Him in faith?
