In Christ - God's Masterpiece

Day 1: Anchored in the Storm

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you.
O Israel, the one who formed you says,
“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you go through deep waters,
I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.
For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom;
I gave Ethiopia[a] and Seba in your place.

Horatio Spafford lost his fortune, his son, and then all four of his daughters to the sea. Yet he wrote words of peace that have endured for over 150 years. His peace was not the absence of pain. It was the presence of Christ inside the pain. Many of us are waiting for the storm to end before we decide to trust God. But the anchor does not work above the water. It works beneath it. Your circumstances do not determine your stability. Your foundation does. When Christ is that foundation, the worst the world can throw at you cannot pull you under. Today, resist the urge to wait for calm. Drop the anchor now.

What storm are you currently in, and have you allowed Christ to be your anchor inside of it rather than waiting for it to pass?

Day 2: A New Creation, Not a Renovation

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

- 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT

There is a significant difference between renovation and recreation. Renovation patches and repairs what already exists. Recreation starts something entirely new. When Paul writes to the Corinthians about being a new creation in Christ, he is not describing a spiritual makeover. He is describing a brand new beginning at the deepest level of who you are. The habits may still need work. The patterns of thinking may still need reshaping. But the foundation beneath all of that has been entirely replaced. You are not a repaired version of who you used to be. You are someone new. The old identity built on performance, failure, and shame no longer defines you. Christ does.

Are you living as though you are a patched-up version of your old self, or are you walking in the reality that you have been made entirely new in Christ?

Day 3: You Are God's Masterpiece

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

- Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT

The Greek word Paul uses in Ephesians 2:10 is poiema, the root of our English word poem. A great poem is not accidental. Every word is chosen with intention. Every line carries weight. Every pause matters. That is what God calls you. Not a mistake. Not an afterthought. Not a rough draft. A poiema. A carefully crafted, intentionally designed work of His hand. Your distinct personality, your specific experiences, your particular gifts — none of these are random. They are the deliberate strokes of a master artist who knew exactly what He was creating and why. You were not made to wander. You were made with purpose already written into your design.

Do you genuinely believe that God crafted you with intentionality, or do you still see parts of yourself as mistakes that need to be hidden rather than offered to Him?

Day 4: Created for Community

Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.

A single piece of stained glass lying on a table is just a broken fragment. It catches a little light but reveals nothing of the full picture. It is only when that piece is set alongside hundreds of others, held together by a framework greater than itself, that something breathtaking emerges. That is the church. You were never designed to live out your faith in isolation. The masterpiece Paul describes in Ephesians 2:10 uses the word we, not I. Your purpose is not fully visible in isolation. It becomes clear in community. The burdens you carry alone were meant to be shared. The gifts you are hiding were meant to be contributed. The masterpiece is incomplete without your piece.

Have you been living your faith in isolation, convincing yourself that community is optional? What has that cost you in terms of purpose, joy, and spiritual growth?

Day 5: Walk Into What God Already Planned

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

- Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

Paul does not say in Ephesians 2:10 that God is scrambling to figure out what to do with you. He says God planned your good works long ago. Before your failures. Before your doubts. Before the seasons that made you feel disqualified. The mission was already written. The path was already prepared. Your role in this masterpiece was already assigned. This means your job is not to create your purpose from scratch. It is to step into what God has already laid out. That step requires courage. It requires community. It requires a willingness to move before you feel fully ready. But the good news is that you are not walking into the unknown. You are walking into the already planned.

This week, intentionally live from your identity in Christ rather than from your circumstances, your past, or your insecurities. Each day, remind yourself of one truth from this devotional: I am anchored. I am made new. I am God’s masterpiece. I belong in community. I was created with purpose.

Then put that truth into action. Trust God with something you’ve been carrying, reject an old label, use a gift He has given you, pursue deeper community, or take a step toward something He is calling you to.
