Alive In Christ

Day 1: From Existing to Living

For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.
-  Colossians 2:9-13 NLT
There is a profound difference between existing and being truly alive. The passage in Colossians describes a fullness that becomes available to every believer in Christ -- not a partial filling, but a complete one. Many people move through life sustained by creation -- by oxygen, water, relationships, and achievement -- without ever connecting to the Creator who designed all of it. Like a fish gasping on a dock, surrounded by air but starving for water, we can be surrounded by good things and still suffocate spiritually. Today, ask yourself honestly: are you merely existing, or are you alive in Christ?
In what areas of your life do you feel like you are simply going through the motions rather than experiencing genuine spiritual life?

Day 2: The Primary Source

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
- John 10:10 NLT
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
- Romans 1:20 NLT
Creation is a gift, but it is a secondary source. The oxygen you breathe, the water that sustains you, the food that nourishes your body -- none of it originated with you. It was all designed and provided by a God who thought carefully about every detail of your existence. Romans 1:20 reminds us that creation itself testifies to the nature of God. Yet God does not want you to stop at the testimony -- He wants you to know the One giving it. John 10:10 describes a life that is full and overflowing. That kind of life is only found in the primary source: Christ Himself.
If God provided nothing except His own presence, would that be enough for you? Why or why not?

Day 3: Do Not Be Taken Captive

Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ.
- Colossians 2:8 NLT
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
- Romans 12:2 NLT
Apostle Paul issues a sharp warning in Colossians 2:8, urging believers not to be taken captive by hollow and deceptive philosophies rooted in human tradition rather than in Christ. The world around us is constantly offering definitions of what a full life looks like -- definitions built on achievement, accumulation, status, and comfort. These definitions are not entirely without appeal, which is what makes them dangerous. They can feel satisfying for a season, just like the vibrant color of autumn leaves. But they are dying. Romans 12:2 calls us to a renewed mind -- one that is shaped by God's truth rather than the patterns of this world.

What philosophies or cultural messages have shaped how you define a successful or fulfilling life?

Day 4: The Living Word

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

- Hebrews 4:12 NLT
our word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path.
- Psalm 119:105 NLT
Hebrews 4:12 describes the word of God as alive and active. This is not poetic language -- it is a theological reality. The Scripture is not a historical document that once carried life; it is a living text that carries life right now, in this moment, for you. If you want to remain alive in Christ, you must remain connected to what is alive. Psalm 119:105 describes God's word as a lamp and a light -- not a lamp that once shone, but one that continues to illuminate each step of the journey. The word of God is one of God's primary instruments for keeping His people spiritually alive and growing.
How consistently are you engaging with Scripture, and do you approach it expecting it to speak to you personally?

Day 5: Stay by the Fire

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
- Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT
As iron sharpens iron,
so a friend sharpens a friend.
- Proverbs 27:17 NLT
Proximity shapes us. If you want to stay warm, you stay near the fire. If you want to remain alive in Christ, you must surround yourself with people who are alive in Christ. Hebrews 10:24-25 is not simply a command to attend church -- it is a call to intentional community where believers stir one another toward love and good works. Proverbs 27:17 describes how iron sharpens iron, how one person genuinely sharpens another. The men's retreat described in this sermon illustrated exactly this truth: men from different backgrounds, different churches, and different struggles came together and found themselves coming back to life because they were in proximity to others who carried the fire of God.
Who in your life consistently encourages your faith and stirs you toward greater spiritual vitality?

Weekly Challenge

This week, intentionally choose the things that keep you alive in Christ. Each day, spend time with the Living Word, seek the Creator before His creation, and stay connected to people who stir your faith.

At the end of each day, ask yourself: “Did I simply exist today, or did I live from the fullness I have in Christ?”

Choose one area where you’ve been spiritually going through the motions and take one intentional step toward greater life, connection, and growth in Christ.
