In Christ - A New Identity

Day 1: Anchored in Christ

This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.

- Hebrews 6:19 NLT

The world offers countless anchors — career, relationships, reputation, wealth. But every one of them can shift, corrode, or disappear without warning. The writer of Hebrews describes hope in Christ as an anchor for the soul that is firm and secure. Just as a climber's anchor driven deep into solid rock can hold an entire team from falling, your identity rooted in Christ holds you steady through every storm life brings. The question worth sitting with today is not whether the storms will come. They will. The question is what you are anchored to when they arrive. Anchor yourself to Christ alone.

- What have you been tempted to anchor your identity to outside of Christ?

- In what area of your life do you most need the stability that only He provides?

- What would it look like today to consciously choose Christ as your anchor?

Day 2: A New Creation, A Fresh Start

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

- 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT

The world has a long memory for your worst moments. Culture tends to define people by their failures, their lowest days, their most public mistakes. But Paul declares that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation — the old has gone, and the new has come. This is not simply motivational language. It is a declaration of spiritual reality. Your past does not have to write your future. God does not look at you through the lens of your worst day. He looks at you through the finished work of Jesus Christ. In Him, your record is clean and your story is not over.

- Is there a past mistake or season you have been allowing to define your present identity?

- What would it mean practically to receive the fresh start Christ offers you today?

- How might embracing your identity as a new creation change how you treat yourself and others?

Day 3: Chosen and Adopted

4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

- Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT

Paul writes to the church at Ephesus using the language of adoption, a concept his Roman readers understood deeply. In the ancient Roman world, adoption was legally final and irrevocable. An adopted son received a completely new identity, all past debts erased, and full rights as an heir. Paul draws on this powerful image to reveal something breathtaking about your standing before God. You were not an afterthought. You were chosen before the foundation of the world and adopted into God's family through Jesus Christ. This status cannot be revoked. You are not on probation with God. You are His child, permanently and completely.

- Do you live as though your place in God's family is secure, or do you feel like you are constantly earning it?

- How does the permanence of your adoption in Christ change the way you approach God in prayer?

- Who in your life might need to hear that they too are chosen and wanted by God?

Day 4: Empowered From the Inside Out

When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

- Ephesians 3:14-19 NLT

Paul closes the first half of Ephesians — the half devoted entirely to identity — with a prayer on his knees. He does not pray for better circumstances or greater resources. He prays that believers would be empowered with inner strength through the Holy Spirit, and that Christ would make His home in their hearts. True transformation does not work from the outside in. No amount of behavioral change, rule-following, or self-improvement can produce what only the Holy Spirit can build from within. Before doing flows right action, being must come first. Let your roots grow down deep into God's love today, and let strength rise from that place.

- Are you trying to change your behavior without first allowing God to transform your inner life?

- What does it look like for Christ to feel truly at home in your heart?

- What spiritual practice — prayer, Scripture, silence — might help you cultivate inner strength this week?

Day 5: Walking in the Identity You Already Have

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

- John 1:12 NLT

John makes a striking declaration: to all who received Christ and believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. The identity is already granted. The question is whether you are walking in it. Receiving a new identity and living from that identity are two different things. Many believers have accepted Christ but still live as though they are defined by failure, fear, or the opinions of others. You are chosen. You are accepted. You are transformed. You are equipped. You are victorious. These are not goals to achieve — they are truths to believe and then live out, one day at a time, in the power of the One who placed them in you.

- Which of these five statements — chosen, accepted, transformed, equipped, victorious — is hardest for you to believe about yourself right now?

- What would change in your daily life if you genuinely lived from that truth?

- Write out one identity statement from Scripture and place it somewhere you will see it every day this week.

Weekly Challenge

This week, identify what has been shaping your identity and replace it with what God says is true. Each morning, choose one truth from Scripture about who you are in Christ—chosen, loved, forgiven, accepted, equipped, or made new—and speak it over yourself.

When insecurity, fear, failure, or the opinions of others try to define you, return to that truth. Don’t just know who you are in Christ—practice living like it.
